The building, as described by Finegold Alexander Architects, is a much-loved community library, reborn with a new spirit of openness. Originally built in 1969, the renovation and contemporary expansion doubles the scale of the facility, creating a universally accessible, light-filled, energy-efficient space with vistas to the outdoors. In collaboration with the architects, DMLA re-envisioned the site to meet the changing needs of the Stoughton community.
The second-story addition created an ideal opportunity for a contemporary “front porch” concept—by creating a natural gathering plinth and grounding the library’s extensive growth. The entry sequence formed accessible, easily identifiable routes from the higher and lower sections of the site, while the main walkway bisects the front entry garden which consists of an abundance of blooms and seasonal color throughout the year.

The best libraries don’t stop at the front door. They provide ample exposure to nature and are welcoming destinations of choice—underscoring the building’s significance to the community and contribution to the beauty of place.
